THE DOOR is an adult upmarket psychological suspense novel about intimacy, money, evidence, and the quiet machinery that makes harm so hard to prove.

Mari Caldwell is a Black housing advocate in Georgia who has learned to read between the lines of official language. She knows how easily damage can be softened, buried, or explained away. So when a polished consultant starts pushing for informal access to frontline housing stories, Mari does what she always does: she keeps records.

Then she meets Luke DeGarmo on a dating app. A restrained maritime engineer with a calm voice and no need to be rescued, Luke seems to understand her without asking her to make herself smaller. But his temporary money trouble keeps shifting shape, and what begins as trust turns into access. Before Mari can name what is happening, her bank account is moving money that is not hers.

When Luke’s identity starts to crack and pressure from the housing world closes in, Mari’s archive of emails, screenshots, notes, and receipts becomes the one thing that might save her — or the thing that makes her easiest to blame. To get free, she has to prove the pattern before two very different systems decide she is the story they can afford to sacrifice.
